I can highly recommend the Peterson Museum to anyone in LA, especially the basement/“vault” tour (even if the one at the Lane here in Nashville is much more free-form and easier to see all of). There’s some truely incredible stuff there. Enjoy these unedited because it’s finals week and I cancelled my Lightroom subscription a couple months ago anyway. Pictures from the Mullin coming soon.

And because I have a lot of knowledge about obscure and useless things, I can tell you that the 2000GT in the photo was almost certainly used in You Only Live Twice (1967) because Connery was too tall for the hardtops, so Toyota chopped the roofs off two cars. Probably worth near 5 million bucks ...

I was there about 8 months ago and can confirm that the car is from that movie.

The Petersen is awesome, and the vault tour is a must for car nuts. The vault goes from the ridiculous to the sublime. 10/ 10 would recommend.

Correct!

I was just a little peeved at how much time the guide spent on the super old stuff and barely any on the 70s race cars or any of the incredible Porsches OR the EB110 (but the EB110 is ok because I got to see one at the Mullin). Super awesome variety though.

You must have had the same guide that I did. I felt like we spent too much time in that first room, then hurried up later when we got to some of the more interesting race cars. And there was construction going on in the back left so we weren’t even allowed in that section.
Still awesome though.

Ol der, larger, Northeastern-sounding white guy? If so, then yes.

I went to the Petersen but was too late to catch a fault tour.
This place is amazing and has blown my God damn mind!

It was about 8 months ago - not sure but maybe.

And what’s amazing is how the museum itself turns over regularly. Think I was there in September.
The Porsche exhibit looks to be the same, but the other exhibits showed low riders, 60s-70s Japanese cars, and movie star cars. The last 2 exhibits * each* had a 2000 GT, with that roaster in the movie exhibit.
Great stuff thanks!

That’s me standing next to one of the cars that (allegedly) was ordered for the movie - Tokyo Toyota Motor Museum:

Very nice! That might actually be the other 2000 that was on display at the Petersen when I visited. It was a white coupe and part of an exhibit that was mostly on loan from a Japanese museum.

They have more than a few very nice cars:

Very nice! The Hakosuka makes me feel kinda funny in my jeans...
Is the first one a Carol?

Pretty sure it’s a Carol - 2 cylinder air-cooled if I recall correctly. And that little GT-R is just gorgeous. Should have taken more photos. And I signed up for a ride in the 2000GT, but they only do one a day. Yes, they run those cars every day.

That’s wild - great that they’re not just sitting.
If offered a ride in one of those cars, I would have to pick the 2000GT, but it would be sooooo hard to say no to the Hakosuka.

You need to sign up well in advance, and I wasn’t advanced enough. But hearing that 2000GT run was enough.

I’m sure those rides are in high demand. I would happily settle for listening to the GT-R and 2000GT though.

If you’re headed for Tokyo, book early.
